Arjun (Movie: Arjun Reddy)

Arjun is so bad that he is good. He gets angry when things don't go his way. He is arrogant, angry and borderline narsisstic. But why then, are so many people attracted to him? Why indeed, are bad boys so attractive? The age old question may be answered by the age old theories of evolutionary psychology. Evolutionary psychology says that human behavior is an output of evolved psychological adaptations to coexist with the changing world. Our species were hunters-gatherers to start with. The man was the hunter and the woman, the nurturerer. She had to choose a mate who could protect her and her offsprings; and possibly, give her the best genes to pass on. So an alpha who was physically strong, risk taking and agressive was the ideal fit. Although we are not cavemen anymore, there are certain traits that still influence our natural selection and sexual selection. So women are attracted to bad boys on a very primal level; in a very Darwinian sexual selection way. Badboys are defined as impulsive, stubborn, headstrong, narsisstic, confident, demands attention and a rebel who is also charming. Arjun fits this bill perfectly. He doesn't think twice before taking morphine or leaving the college over an apology, he is narassictic when he declares how his love story is stronger than his friends', he is confident and arrogant when it comes to his work. Now add a little more charisma and caring; and voila! You have a caring bad body. Do note that Arjun is a high functioning bad boy. May be he wouldn't be very attractive if he all anger and no skills. Woman's evolutionary role is a nurturer and all the women in his life nuture him in their own capacity. Jia, tries to fix his broken heart; his nurses always look after him, the prostitutes cook for him and finally Preeti, his ultimate nurturer. As an audience, you are also emotionally invested in healing him. The bad boy never really cares about things. If he chooses to, he will do it in way, that he preceives to be the best. And if decides to crash, he'll decide how he should crash and fall. #arjunreddy #badboy #evolutionarypsychology #sandeepreddyvanga #vijaydevarkonda #telugucinema #kabirsingh
